Goats Milk Soap Recipe: Your Guide To Goats Milk Soap

goats milk soap recipe

More and more people these days are finding alternatives to the harsh chemical products that sneak their way into our lives without us noticing.

One of the products that's gaining ground in a variety of ways and uses is goat's milk.

People who are lactose intolerant find that goat's milk agrees with their system, and often even severe skin problems like eczema can be cleared with this one simple change in diet.

As far as goat's milk soap goes, the difference between it and the regular, off the shelf soap is monumental.

So what’s in this so-called miracle milk that makes its soap so wonderful?

We’ll give you the run down on what makes goat's milk great, some soaps that you can buy to try at home and even a goat's milk soap recipe for you to attempt.

What Makes Goat's Milk Soap Great?

Cream

That’s right – good, rich, luscious cream. This is very important to the soap making process, as it helps to maintain the moisturizing benefits of the soap to maintain healthy and hydrated skin.

Goat's milk soap doesn’t dry out your skin like other soaps can, and this is especially important during winter months when skin suffers dryness the most.

Vitamins

Goat's milk is very high in vitamin A. This vitamin is known to help repair damaged skin tissue, reduce lines and wrinkles, help to reduce achy flare-ups, and even help to provide relief from issues like psoriasis.

Although there are many vitamins naturally found in goat's milk, it's this particular vitamin that helps to offer skin a great health boost.

Minerals

Selenium is one mineral that's found in goats milk and is thought to be a great skin cancer-fighting agent. This mineral can also help to reduce sun damage and keep skin looking fresh and young.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that removes dead skin cells and leaves only smoother skin underneath, making your face appear younger and fresher.

Alpha hydroxy does this by breaking the bonds that typically hold dead skin cells together.

These dead skin cells can sometimes irritate skin, so removing them may provide other unexpected benefits such as reducing inflammation or redness.

Regular soaps do remove dead skin cells as well, but it’s typically through harsh chemical acids that can provide further damage to your face and body.

Typical Ingredients In Goat's Milk Soap

Read a standard list of ingredients on your mass produced, chemically enhanced soap, and you’ll find a wealth of ingredients, but you probably won’t understand or recognize half of the words.

In fact, many of them will contain ingredients like soybean or corn oil. They may also list vegetable oil, or modified rapeseed oil, or canola oil.

Did you know that each of these oils was in all likelihood grown from a GMO crop?

Some countries have banned the use of GMO crops entirely, and although this is not the case for North America, it should definitely make you think about alternatives where possible.

Another ingredient that you may notice listed on your commercial soap is sodium lauryl sulphate.

This ingredient is what gives soap it’s lovely lather. However, it's also an ingredient that can strip the natural oils from your skin, leaving it irritated and feeling dry.

If you notice itchy, dry or tight feeling skin once you’ve showered, this is probably the culprit.

The very best goat's milk soap should provide only 3 ingredients, especially if it’s homemade.

These ingredients are goat's milk, some type of oil (coconut, palm or olive are often used) and essential oils (both for their beautiful fragrance and for added health benefits).

Goat's Milk Soap Recipe

  •  2 C melt and pour organic soap base with goat's milk
  •  Double boiler (you could also use an aluminum bowl placed over a pan of water)
  •  3 tbsp organic jojoba or almond oil
  •  Essential oil of your choosing. Here we’ll use 20 drops sweet orange, 5 drops all spice, 10 drops of frankincense.
  •  Silicone soap mold

The How To: Goat’s Milk Soap Recipe

1. Cut your melt and pour soap base into small, fairly evenly sized cubes so that they melt faster.

2. Place the cubes into your double boiler (or aluminum bowl) and turn your burner on to low or medium heat, depending on how hot your stovetop is.

3. Continuously stir the cubes of soap base until it has completely melted

4. Add your jojoba or almond oil (you can successfully use other oils like coconut as well) and stir into your melted base.

5. Add your desired essential oils. You could add lavender mixed with citrus, or patchouli with a little rosemary. The scent blend is up to you and based on what you’d like to achieve with regards to scent and healing properties. If you’d rather have a non-scented soap, just skip this step.

6. Pour a little bit of Himalayan salt into the bottom of your soap mold.

7. Gently and slowly pour your melted soap base blend into the silicone soap mold, taking care to avoid spills.

8. Add a sprinkle of Himalayan salt to the top of your soap mixture while the soap is still in liquid form.

9. Let the soap dry for 24 hours before taking it from the mold. It’s ready to use at this point, although you may want to wait an additional few days if you’re going to add any decorative touches, like paper wrapping.
